FAQS
Which Ford Transit is best to buy? +
For most buyers, the best used Transit is a Mk8 (2014 onwards) with the 2.0 EcoBlue engine, ideally from the 2019 facelift onwards when Ford updated the engine and cabin tech. A 350 medium-wheelbase, medium-roof van suits most trades. Choose rear-wheel drive if you carry heavy loads or tow, and front-wheel drive if you want a lower load floor and lighter running costs.
If the van is mainly for local work, a smaller Transit Custom may suit you better.
What is the most common problem with Ford Transit? +
It depends on the engine. On 2016-onward 2.0 EcoBlue vans, the main concern is the “wet” timing belt. The belt sits in oil inside the engine, which improves efficiency but exposes it to oil contamination. Because of premature wear, Ford cut the replacement interval to six years or 100,000 miles, down from 10 years or 150,000 miles, for all Transit and Transit Custom models with this engine. On older 2.2 TDCi vans, the common problems are injectors and emissions parts.
Which Transit engine is most reliable? +
No engine is trouble-free, but the 2.2 TDCi Duratorq (fitted roughly 2006–2016) is widely seen as the tougher, simpler unit. It runs a timing chain rather than a wet belt. Its weak points are the injectors and the DPF, both of which you can check on a test drive and with a diagnostic scan.
The 2.0 EcoBlue is more efficient, cleaner (Euro 6), and more enjoyable to drive. It is reliable when the belt is changed on time and the van is serviced with the correct oil.
