What’s a Tipper Truck?

A tipper truck is a commercial vehicle with an open rear bed and a hydraulic system that lifts and tilts the bed to let items slide out effortlessly. The cab of a tipper van can be single with 2 or 3 seats, or double with up to 7 seats.

Who Buys a Tipper Truck?

Tipper trucks come in handy for a variety of jobs, but they’re mainly bought for:

  • Construction and demolition
  • Landscaping
  • Road maintenance
  • Rubbish Removal

What to Consider When Buying a Tipper Truck

There are several things to consider when buying a tipper truck; the most important is probably what licence you hold and what GVW you can operate with a regular licence, but there are other important factors to keep in mind.

Gross Vehicle Weight & Licence Category

A 3.5 tonne tipper can be driven on a standard category B licence. Anything from 3.5-7.5 tonnes needs a Category C1 licence. So consider the weight in relation to the licence you currently have.

Payload Capacity

If you want to work to your licence limit, a lighter chassis can carry more payload within the same weight brackets.

Tipping Mechanism

Single-ram, twin-ram, or three-way tipping bodies suit different jobs; for instance, three-way tippers (rear and both sides) are popular for landscaping and jobs where material needs to be deposited from multiple angles.

Body Material & Type

Steel bodies are tougher and cheaper but heavier, which can eat into your payload. Alloy bodies are lighter, offering more usable payload, but they cost more and may be less resistant to continuous damage from aggregate and rubble.

Cab Configuration

Single-cab maximises load length and payload; double-cab sacrifices some load length and capacity to carry a full crew to a site.

Drivetrain

4x4 is ideal for construction/agricultural sites where you’ll find poor ground conditions; 2x4 is lighter, cheaper to run, and powerful enough for road-based work.

Power Take Off (PTO) & Hydraulic System

The tipping ram, hydraulic pump and PTO are the parts most likely to wear or fail on a hard-used tipper

Body Condition & Wear

Tipper beds take significant abuse from aggregate, rubble and repeated loading; look out for dents, corrosion, and worn droptail/tailgate mechanism.
