What is a Pickup Truck?

A pickup truck is a light- to medium-duty vehicle characterised by an enclosed cabin that seats 2 to 5 people and an open-top cargo bed. A pickup is a great choice for transporting materials, moving and outdoor experiences.

Who Buys a Pickup Truck?

Pickup trucks are often bought by:

  • Construction workers, including builders and contractors
  • Rural workers like farmers and agricultural workers who need to navigate rough terrain and carry and tow heavy loads
  • Outdoors enthusiasts who need a reliable vehicle for off-road travel

What to Consider When Buying a Pickup

If you’re considering buying a pickup truck, there are many factors to consider before making a purchase.

Payload Capacity

UK tax law requires a payload of 1,000kg+ for a double-cab pick-up to qualify as a commercial vehicle rather than a car. This is worth keeping in mind if you want to benefit from tax advantages.

Towing Capacity

Most modern pickups are capped at 3,500kg braked and 750kg unbraked. Older or entry-level variants may have a lower maximum towing capacity.

Cab Type

A double cab is the most common choice, but if you’re buying purely for business, a single or extended cab will offer a longer bed.

Engine & Emisisons

New pickups tend to be ULEZ compliant; however, if buying pre-2015 models, they won’t be Euro 6.

Drivetrain: 4x2 vs 4x4

If you’re driving off-road/off-site more often than not, a 4x4 sends power to all four wheels for maximum traction. If you mainly drive in urban areas, a 4x2 is lighter and has a better fuel economy.

Running Costs & Fuel Economy

Real-world mpg often differs from claimed figures, especially under load; knowing the real-world figure is vital to make an informed choice.

4x4 vs 4x2 What Do You Really Need?

Most questions about pickup trucks revolve around whether a 4x4 is better than a 4x2. There’s no universally accepted winner, as each is the best pick for its environment.

4x2

The main benefits of the 4x2 are its higher payload and towing capacity, and better fuel economy, since power is delivered only to the front two wheels. A 4x2 also has a lower starting price compared to a 4x4.

If you’re someone living in the South-East of the UK, mainly driving in urban areas and with no off-road/site driving, a 4x2 is more than good enough. However, colder, snowy, or icy areas such as those in Scotland, northern England, and Wales will highlight the disadvantages of a 4x2, especially if any off-road driving is required.

4x4

If you work in rural areas, a 4x4 is a no-brainer, as its off-road capabilities are significantly higher, particularly when it comes to water crossings, mud, or steep inclines. The trade-off is a lower payload and towing capacity. However, this is not necessarily a negative, as a 4x4 offers an improved towing capability on slippery inclines.

The cons of a 4x4 include the higher starting price and higher maintenance costs, as the extra drivetrain components make them more expensive to maintain. 4x4s are also less fuel efficient.

  • Are there electric pickup trucks?

Yes, current electric pickups in the UK include the KGM Musso, Maxus eTerron 9, and Maxus T90EV. In June 2026, Toyota opened order books for its Hilux EV.

  • Are there plug-in hybrid pickup trucks?

Yes, the best-known example in the UK is the Ford Ranger Plug-in Hybrid, launched in 2025. It comes with a 2.3-litre EcoBoost petrol engine and a 75 kW electric motor with a 11.8 kWh usable battery. The Ford Ranger PHEV still retains its 1,000kg payload and the 3,500 kg maximum towing capacity.

  • What is the best pickup to buy?

There isn't a single "best"; however, in the UK, the Ford Ranger is the best-selling pickup. It's a strong all-rounder for trade and lifestyle use, and currently the only one available as a PHEV option.

Other popular and praised pickup trucks are the Toyota Hilux and the VW Amarok.

  • What is the biggest pickup truck on the market?

Within the UK, the VW Amarok is one of the largest, at 5,390mm long, with one of the widest load beds in its class.

  • Can you add a bike rack to a pickup truck?

Yes, and there are three common options: a tow bar-mounted rack (the most popular option, as most pickups have a tow bar as standard), a bed-mounted rack that secures the bike in the load bed, or a roof-mounted rack when roof rails or bars are fitted.

  • What is a double-cab pickup?

A double-cab pickup, also called a crew cab pickup, has four full-size doors and a rear bench seat that comfortably fits adults, in addition to the front row. It's the most common configuration sold in the UK, as it works as a trade vehicle and an everyday family vehicle.
